Welcome Preston McAfee
The Linde Institute is pleased to announce that economist Preston McAfee is returning to Caltech, where he will join the faculty as a Professor of Business Economics and Management in August of 2014. McAfee most recently was a director in Google Strategic Technologies, arriving there in 2012 after serving as Chief Economist, Vice President, and a Research Fellow at Yahoo! Research since 2007. He was the J. Stanley Johnson Professor at Caltech from 2004 to 2009.
He is the author of three books, including a free open-source microeconomics textbook, and more than 100 scholarly articles. Jointly or independently, McAfee holds six patents. He has served as editor, co-editor, or associate editor of a number of journals including the American Economic Review.
McAfee has received the SPARC Innovator Award, an honorary doctorate from Purdue University, Caltech’s ASCIT Teaching Award for Mentoring, and the John S. Day Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue’s Krannert School of Management. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Industrial Organization Society and is a fellow and member of the Econometric Society. He earned two master’s degrees from Purdue and received his Ph.D. in economics there in 1980.
McAfee will bring considerable experience and expertise to the Linde Institute, which will benefit from his interdisciplinary work combining business strategy, economics, and computer science.
